HEART: Health Education Africa Resource Team
How It All Began
|
HEART Founder - Vickie Winkler, RN HEART was formed in February 2000 in response to these needs. Serving as Executive Director, she leads HEART to continue to focus on original objectives and to date has educated more than 70,000 Kenyan people in HIV/AIDS prevention. HEART has also added comprehensive programs that address the care, treatment and empowerment of those infected and affected by HIV. These projects focus on “orphan prevention.” |

Our Focus
The focus of HEART is to empower the people of Africa to survive the HIV/AIDS pandemic through integrated cross-cutting projects such as; HIV prevention education messages combating the spread of HIV/AIDS, TB, Malaria, and Typhoid; developing economic infrastructure, gender equality and working closely with local leaders (teachers, pastors, chiefs etc.) to build their capacity of good governance through establishing “Community Based Organizations” (CBO) that produce capable leaders at the grass roots level.
HEART assists these CBO’s to launch sustainable micro-enterprise projects which empower those affected by HIV/AIDS to care for themselves, and the orphaned and vulnerable children of their families and villages.
We also have the HEART Lodge which is our own organizational Income Generating Activity (IGA) and believe that part of our work with the CBO’s that we mentor is to teach this principle of sustainability not only within the recipients under their care but within the organizational structure so that the organization is not totally dependent upon grant funding.
The Heart Lodge
The HEART compound includes a lodge with the capacity to house up to 25 team members and guests.
HEART leaders, management and Kenyan staff call the compound home and open their doors to volunteer teams throughout the year. Surrounded by beautiful floral gardens, HEART provides a space that says, come and enjoy the beauty of Kenya as we join together to serve.
